Somaliland has raised concerns about a growing connection between the Al-Shabaab militant group and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, suggesting that the two groups are collaborating to destabilize the region’s security.
Somaliland’s Minister of Interior, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, in an interview with Al Arabiya’s Arabic channel, urged the Somali government to address this emerging alliance. “There is a strong link between the Houthis and Al-Shabaab, which poses a serious threat to regional stability. The Somali government must take action to control this partnership,” he stated.
He also called on the international community to play a significant role in curbing activities that threaten the region’s trade and security, emphasizing that Somaliland alone cannot be solely relied upon to safeguard the Red Sea.
The United States has previously noted the connection between the Houthi rebels and Al-Shabaab, raising concerns that the Houthis could potentially supply Al-Shabaab with advanced weaponry.
