The Federal Republic of Somalia has been elected to the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for a 3-year term running from 2026 to 2028.

Somalia now sits at the helm of the African Union Peace and Security Council after the Wednesday election held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The victory is more than a mere administrative appointment; it is a profound gesture of trust from the 55 member states of the African Union. By securing this seat, Somalia transitions from being a primary subject of PSC deliberations to an active architect of continental security policy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the election reflects the confidence bestowed by the fellow African Union member states and underscores our shared vision for a stable Africa.

The federal government of Somalia has outlined key pillars of its tenure, where they will push for regional stability and spearhead the war against terror groups like Al-Shabaab.

Somalia will push for an African-led solution to the current challenges facing African countries and reform institutions.

There is a push to advocate for a dialogue-first approach in active conflict zones to create stability in Africa.

Somalia for years has been part of the African Union through the ATMIS, but the elections flip the script and open a new page where Somalia now stands to lead and advise its neighboring countries.
