19 Somali Lawmakers suspended from the house of the people over chaos

The speaker of the House of the People (Lower House) has suspended 19 members of parliament, following their involvement in the disruption of a parliamentary session in the Somalia bicameral parliament last month.

The suspensions bar 19 members of parliament from attending 12 consecutive parliamentary sessions, which include joint sessions of the two houses and the regular sittings of the House of the People, effective February 7, 2026.

The decree, which was signed by the acting speaker Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, cites several violations of the house’s internal rules and regulations.

According to the document, the lawmakers were involved in attempts to disrupt and obstruct the joint session held on February 2, 2026.

The office of the speaker further said it found the actions of the suspended legislatures as being harmful to the security and dignity of the legislative process, and the action was to prevent further chaos.

Suspended members are Mohamed Jaamac Mursal, Abdirashid Mohamed Hidig (Geele), Abbas Ali Ibrahim, Ali Mahdi Mohamed (Qalato), and Nasra Mahdi Arale. Ali Haji Dhir Saleban, Abdirashid Jire Khalinle, Mariam Aweis Jama, and Fuduma Farah Adan (Fuduma nine) Sais Ali Muse. Ifrah Mohamed Ismail (Barakaale), Ahmed Osman Ibrahim (Daqare), Yusuf Hussien Ahmed (Gama-diid), Daud Abdikarim Omar, Khadara Ahmed Mohamud, Hassan Hurre Ugas, and Mohamed Abdirahman Nadif.

The decree also issued a direct mandate to the security command of the House of the People to strictly enforce the order not to allow suspended members into the chambers of the house.
