Mogadishu– The opposition protest scheduled to take place today in Mogadishu has been postponed following mediation efforts led by Imaam Ugaas Maxamuud Cali Ugaas, alongside committees of parliamentarians and Hawiye clan elders.
The demonstration, originally planned for Siinaay, Tarabuunka and Deyniile districts, has been delayed for nine days to allow for technical preparations. At a joint press conference, the Mediation Committee and leaders of the National Salvation Forum confirmed that the opposition had accepted the appeal, and that the Federal Government will be expected to guarantee security during the upcoming protest.
The decision has eased public fears of potential violence, with concerns that today’s protest could have escalated into armed clashes. Both sides agreed that protests are a constitutional right, but must be conducted peacefully and in coordination with the government. The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to freedom of assembly, while warning that armed mobilization, use of technicals, and heavy weaponry remain strictly prohibited.
Uncertainty remains over how events will unfold after the nine-day delay, and what steps both the government and mediation committees will take if disagreements persist.
