Hundreds of residents gathered across several neighbourhoods of Mogadishu on Monday night to protest Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland, a move demonstrators described as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to Raxanreeb Online.
Protesters, many waving Somali flags, marched along the busy Maka Al-Mukarama Road, chanting slogans rejecting secession and expressing support for Somalia’s unity. The crowd called for resistance to what they characterised as foreign interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.
Security forces were deployed to the area as the demonstration took place. Witnesses said the protest remained largely peaceful, with participants chanting anti-Israel slogans and messages urging Somaliland residents to remain part of Somalia.
Several demonstrators who spoke to local media said they were prepared to defend the country and strongly opposed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
The protest reflects heightened public anger in the capital, with demonstrators portraying the mobilisation as a firm stand in defence of Somalia’s national unity.
