AU Approves Mission for Somalia’s Security Transition

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has approved the creation of a new mission in Somalia, named the “African Union Mission to Support and Stabilize Somalia.” This decision marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.

In its statement, the Council emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough assessment of the third phase of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) withdrawal. This assessment aims to prevent any security vacuums during the transition to the new mission. The Council also commended the enhanced collaboration between the African Union, the Somali government, and international partners, which is crucial for the successful implementation of the new mission’s objectives.

Additionally, the Council stressed the urgent need to increase support for the Somali government in mobilizing resources for stability and state-building. Ensuring a smooth transfer of security responsibilities to Somali security forces is highlighted as a key priority in the ongoing efforts to establish lasting peace in Somalia.
