MOGADISHU – The People’s Republic of China has donated USD 1 million to the Federal Government of Somalia to support ongoing drought relief efforts, as millions of Somalis face worsening humanitarian conditions.
According to the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), more than 4.4 million people across the country are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance due to the prolonged drought and related climate shocks.
The announcement was made during a cheque handover ceremony to SoDMA Commissioner Mahamuud Moalim. China’s Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, reaffirmed his country’s solidarity with the Somali people and its commitment to supporting both emergency relief and long-term resilience-building initiatives.
Commissioner Moalim welcomed the contribution and stated that SoDMA will strengthen its cooperation with China and other international partners to ensure timely and effective delivery of aid to the most affected families, particularly those in remote and drought-hit areas.
On Monday, SoDMA distributed clothing donations to vulnerable households living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, providing some relief as drought-driven displacement continues to rise across Somalia.
Somalia remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate shocks, repeatedly facing cycles of severe drought followed by destructive floods. Humanitarian actors warn that without sustained international support, the situation could further deteriorate, deepening food insecurity and displacement across the country.
