Mogadishu, Somalia – Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed delivered an impassioned speech to hundreds of young supporters who recently joined his political party. Addressing key issues of national security and the Federal Government’s disarmament efforts, Sheikh Sharif emphasized the urgent need for unity, inclusivity, and the protection of political freedoms in Somalia.
Sheikh Sharif expressed grave concerns about the safety of opposition politicians, highlighting the fragile security situation that continues to pose risks for political actors.
“The safety of opposition politicians remains uncertain,” he stated, urging the government to prioritize creating an environment where all voices can participate in the democratic process without fear. He stressed that a genuinely inclusive system is critical to Somalia’s path toward stability.
While acknowledging the importance of disarmament in promoting peace, Sheikh Sharif raised doubts about the government’s approach, particularly regarding its impact on opposition leaders. He argued that, given the current security risks, disarming the opposition prematurely would leave them vulnerable.
“Until genuine peace is established, arms remain our only way to protect ourselves and our political activities,” he said, cautioning against the use of force to suppress dissenting voices.
Sheikh Sharif’s remarks resonated deeply with the audience, particularly the youth, as he called for collaboration and trust-building between political factions. His speech was a heartfelt appeal for unity and a reminder of the shared responsibility to create a peaceful, democratic Somalia.
