NAIROBI, KENYA – Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, says the Kenyan government has filed a complaint against Somali youth who record videos on major highways in Nairobi, accusing them of endangering lives.
According to the ambassador, one person has died and several others have been injured as a result of such dangerous stunts, which involve youths filming themselves on busy roads and around moving vehicles. He said Kenyan security agencies have asked the Somali Embassy to help raise awareness among Somali nationals and discourage the practice.
Ambassador Abdulle stressed that these actions do not represent Somali culture or the wider Somali community in Kenya, but are limited to a small group of youths whose behaviour will be addressed. He urged young people to take photos and videos in safe places such as homes and hotels instead of busy roads.
In a similar context, authorities have previously issued warnings in Mogadishu after some youths were seen recording videos on main roads near heavy trucks and other vehicles, putting themselves and others at serious risk. Authorities in both countries have called on youth to stop such practices and prioritise public safety.
