Political Leaders Hold Consultative Talks in Mogadishu Amid Rising Tensions

Senior figures from Somalia’s National Dignity Union Party on Sunday evening held political consultations at the Mogadishu residence of former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, amid growing political tensions in the country.

The delegation included former Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon (Saacid) and former Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir, alongside other senior party leaders.

Sources familiar with the meeting said the talks centered on a comprehensive exchange of views on Somalia’s political landscape, national unity, state-building efforts, and the future direction of the country’s governance and political transition. The discussions took place at a time when Somalia is navigating a particularly delicate and uncertain political period.

Participants emphasized the need to enhance inclusive national dialogue and to work toward a unified political approach capable of overcoming the current challenges facing the country. They agreed that sustained consultation and dialogue at the national level are critical to resolving Somalia’s persistent political disputes.

The meeting also stressed the importance of grounding any political settlement in constitutional principles, including a renewed commitment to the Provisional Constitution, while taking into account previous decisions and understandings reached through national consultative processes involving key political actors.

Those in attendance concurred that the current political situation demands greater political maturity, compromise, and a clear prioritization of national interests over personal or factional agendas.

The consultations come as Somalia continues to grapple with political disagreements, an ongoing electoral impasse, and heightened tensions among political stakeholders—factors that have significantly affected the country’s state-building process and the implementation of its electoral framework.
