Beledxaawo — An armed group on Sunday night killed Sheikh Maxamuud Mohamed, a well-known public figure in the town of Beledxaawo, local sources confirmed.
The victim was widely recognised for his active engagement on social media, where he regularly commented on and analysed political and security developments in Beledxaawo, including recurring clashes and instability in the area. His killing has heightened concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the town.
Beledxaawo has experienced nearly five months of sustained insecurity marked by armed confrontations, clan-related killings, and repeated militant attacks. Civilians continue to face heightened risks, as lawlessness and targeted violence persist.
The town is considered one of the most insecure areas in the Gedo region, with local residents and observers citing serious challenges in security reinforcement and counterterrorism efforts. Concerns have also been raised about the effectiveness of the current security leadership and coordination mechanisms.
In response to the latest killing, there have been renewed calls for the Federal Government of Somalia to undertake a comprehensive review of security arrangements in Beledxaawo, including the performance of local commanders, in order to curb violence and restore public confidence.
Residents say the civilian population remains under severe strain and is urgently in need of enhanced protection, immediate security measures, and sustained government support to stabilise the town.
