Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has issued a warning to the Somali government about the potential dangers of transferring control of the country’s airspace to a foreign nation. He emphasized that such a move would threaten Somalia’s sovereignty and independence, which have been hard-won over the years.
Farmaajo expressed particular concern over reports that the United Arab Emirates might be given control of Somali airspace. He described this as a step backward, undoing the significant progress made through the dedication of Somali experts and substantial investments aimed at rebuilding the nation.
The former president highlighted that the restoration of Somalia’s airspace management was a major achievement, thanks to the efforts of Somali professionals, financial resources, and strong diplomatic efforts. He expressed disappointment that this accomplishment could be undermined by what he sees as short-sighted personal interests.
Farmaajo also pointed out that Somalia now has modern equipment and highly skilled local professionals who have raised the country’s airspace management to the highest international standards. He argued that there is no need for foreign companies or countries to take over this vital responsibility.
