Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has sharply criticized Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a serious misfortune for the territory.
Speaking during a discussion on a range of international issues, Fidan said he views Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as the gravest setback the region could face. He argued that such a development represents a profound blow to a Muslim society or political entity, particularly given the absence of wider international recognition.
According to the Turkish foreign minister, the recognition was not based on Somaliland’s intrinsic merits, but rather on what he characterized as Israel’s pursuit of unfavorable regional political objectives. He suggested that the move reflects instrumentalization rather than genuine diplomatic support.
Fidan added that, in moral and political terms, the situation amounts to a serious humiliation and a form of punishment, urging those involved to exercise restraint and self-reflection. He warned that aligning with external agendas could result in long-term damage rather than legitimacy or stability.
Turkey has consistently reaffirmed its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia and has opposed unilateral actions that, in its view, undermine regional stability.
