Somalia’s President Visits Kismayo as Villa Somalia Statement Fuels Debate Over Federal–State Relations

President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has arrived in Kismayo, the interim capital of the Jubaland State. He was warmly received by Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe), the President of the Jubaland State.

The presidential delegation was escorted to the State House in Kismayo, where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held talks with President Ahmed Madobe aimed at resolving the ongoing political disputes between the Federal Government and the Jubaland administration.

Meanwhile, a statement published on Villa Somalia’s official page regarding the President’s visit sparked widespread discussion, after the post failed to mention Ahmed Madobe by name or refer to him as the President of Jubaland.

In contrast, the official Jubaland Presidency page described the meeting as “Ahmed Madobe welcoming his brother Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Kismayo,” suggesting that the Jubaland administration, in turn, refrained from acknowledging Hassan Sheikh as the legitimate President of Somalia — reflecting the underlying political tensions between the two sides.
