MOGADISHU —The House of the People of the 11th Federal Parliament of Somalia on Saturday tabled amendments to the Somali Police Law, triggering debate among lawmakers over several provisions.
A number of MPs raised concerns about specific articles in the revised draft, calling for further scrutiny before the bill advances. Members of Parliament’s Interior and Security Committee said they plan to summon senior security commanders to answer questions on issues the committee said had not been adequately addressed.
Some lawmakers argued that the amended legislation focuses largely on the Federal Police while not clearly covering police forces under Somalia’s Federal Member States. They urged that the clauses flagged during the session be revisited.
Others backed the amendments, saying the revised draft introduces important updates in response to the evolving roles and operating conditions of the force over time.
The Somali Police Force was established on 20 December 1943 and is set to mark its 82nd anniversary in seven days. The force has long operated under earlier legal frameworks, which the current draft seeks to update.
