Somali Opposition Council Cautions Against Using Security Forces in Political Disputes

The Council for Somalia’s Future on Monday warned against any attempt to use the national armed forces for political purposes, saying such moves could undermine public trust in the military and threaten national stability.

In a statement, the council expressed what it described as deep concern over efforts to draw the Somali National Army into political agendas, particularly in connection with possible term-extension disputes.

It said the armed forces must not be used to advance private or factional interests, warning that any misuse of the military outside the framework of the law would damage state institutions and weaken confidence in one of the country’s most important national bodies.

“The National Army is not an instrument for personal or group interests,” the statement said.

The council said the military should remain neutral and professional, and cautioned that the introduction of political interests or clan divisions into the security forces could erode cohesion within the ranks and pose a wider risk to the country’s security.

The statement also referred to recent remarks by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud regarding his term in office, saying they had raised concerns over the possibility that state security institutions could be drawn into political processes.

The council called on the Federal Government of Somalia to safeguard the neutrality of the armed forces and prevent any political interference in their operations. It also urged the authorities to protect the military from actions that could damage its reputation and to ensure that commanders and officers carry out their duties in line with the constitution and national laws.

The council said preserving the independence and integrity of the security institutions was essential to maintaining public trust and achieving lasting peace and stability in Somalia.
