SOMALIA: Travel Ban on MPs Sparks Federal Crisis

Mogadishu — The Council for Somalia’s Future has strongly criticized a decision reportedly ordered by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to block several members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia from travelling to Puntland, where they were expected to take part in ongoing electoral activities.

In a statement released in Mogadishu, the Council described the measure as carrying significant legal, constitutional and political implications. It argued that preventing lawmakers from travelling constitutes a violation of their constitutionally protected freedom of movement and parliamentary immunity.

The Council further expressed concern over what it described as the use of civil aviation authorities for political purposes, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the country’s aviation institutions and negatively affect Somalia’s international aviation standing.

According to the statement, the decision risks exacerbating existing political tensions rather than contributing to dialogue and resolution. The Council called on the President to reconsider and reverse the order, urging respect for the rule of law, institutional cooperation and the principles underpinning Somalia’s federal system.

The group concluded by stressing that, at a time when Somalia faces pressing security and economic challenges, national leadership must demonstrate responsibility, political maturity and a firm commitment to constitutional governance and federal unity.
