ERIGABO, Somalia — At least seven people have been killed in intense fighting between Somaliland forces and the SSC-Khaatumo militia in the northern city of Eerigabo, local sources confirmed. The violence, which began on Monday, has displaced residents and overwhelmed local hospitals with casualties, including both combatants and civilians.
The SSC-Khaatumo administration has accused Somaliland of targeting civilians, alleging the deaths of a local businessman and protesters. In response, Somaliland deployed its largest military unit to the region on Tuesday, escalating tensions in the contested Sanaag region. SSC-Khaatumo forces have also fortified their positions with advanced weaponry and elite fighters, signaling a potential for prolonged conflict.
Eerigabo’s strategic importance in regional power dynamics has made it a focal point of territorial disputes, further complicating efforts to achieve peace. Humanitarian organizations have expressed alarm over the civilian toll and called for immediate dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
The Somali federal government and international mediators have yet to take decisive action, but pressure is mounting to de-escalate the conflict and protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
