AU Chief Urges $190 Million Boost for Somalia Security Mission

Kampala, Uganda — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has appealed to the international community for $190 million to support the African Union’s new security mission in Somalia, known as AUSSOM.

Speaking at a meeting held in Uganda, Mahamat confirmed that the transfer of responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to AUSSOM has been completed. However, he warned that significant funding challenges remain, particularly for covering operational costs during 2025.

Mahamat emphasized the urgent need for international partners to help finance the next phase of the mission, stating that failure to secure the required funds could jeopardize efforts to stabilize Somalia.

He also stressed the importance of fully implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719, which outlines the framework for AUSSOM’s operations. The Chairperson called for accelerated support to Somalia, particularly in strengthening its fight against Al-Shabaab militants.

In addition, Mahamat noted that priority is being given to rebuilding the Somali National Army, to enable national forces to take over full responsibility for the country’s security.

The call for funding comes at a time when AUSSOM, launched earlier this year, is facing operational challenges and financial shortfalls.
