A heavily armed advance team from the Jubaland presidential guard arrived in Mogadishu on Tuesday morning ahead of the high-profile arrival of Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe.
Madobe is expected in Mogadishu for the planned consultative meeting with other political actors and federal leaders.
The arrival of the security detail marks a significant step from the previous diplomatic standoff that was witnessed a few weeks ago after the federal government blocked the entry of the similar advance team for Jubaland, citing security protocols and administrative hurdles.
Sources close to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud indicate that this week’s discussion will focus on navigating the ongoing debate over the election model, where the federal government had already given a notice for the regional local election in the federal state for a one-person-one-vote system, while some states are in favor of the 4.5-clan election system.
