Puntland President Sadi Abduallah Deni has revealed he will only leave Mogadishu for Garowe upon reaching a consensus on the contentious electoral framework model for the 2026 election.
Speaking at a political gathering in Mogadishu on Wednesday after arriving for the critical, much-awaited talk with the Federal government leaders, Deni made it clear he has no plans of leaving Mogadishu.
“I will remain in Mogadishu until we reach a final resolution on the complex political situation, particularly the disputes surrounding the electoral framework,” said President Deni
He warned a section of leaders in Somalia seeking to unilaterally alter the country’s governance structures that they will be exposed by their deeds and that their plans will not succeed.
Puntland has openly opposed the federal government’s position on the electoral model, where the federal government has insisted on the one-person-one-vote system.
There is also a standoff on the ongoing constitutional reforms in Somalia, where the federal government has maintained its position to overhaul the constitution.
Timelines for the implementation of the new proposals have been viewed by Puntland as hurried.
The current regime has over 3 months left in office, and the political landscape in Somalia will be defined in the 2026-2028 window, with many analysts saying that it holds the make-or-break deal for Somalia.
