Political Rift Deepens as MPs Continue Debate on Key Constitutional Changes

Lawmakers from Somalia’s ruling coalition in both chambers of the Federal Parliament on Monday continued formal deliberations on proposed amendments to the country’s Provisional Constitution, as part of the ongoing constitutional review process.

On Sunday, parliamentarians held detailed discussions on Chapter Four of the Provisional Constitution, focusing on proposed limited amendments to Articles 49, 50, and 54. After extended debate, the two chambers formally concluded deliberations on Chapter Four.

Discussions on provisions contained in Chapter Five were also initiated on Sunday, representing another key stage in the constitutional review procedure. Parliamentary sources indicated that these deliberations are expected to continue during today’s session.

Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers have voiced strong objections to the approach adopted by the leadership of both chambers in advancing the constitutional amendments, arguing that the process has not been preceded by adequate political consultation.

In parallel, several sanctioned members of parliament have cautioned against proceeding with amendments to core constitutional articles, stressing that such provisions require broad national consensus and a unified political vision before any revisions can be undertaken.
