Mogadishu — The United States Africa Command (United States Africa Command”) has delivered weapons and military equipment to officers of the Somali National Army (SNA) involved in ongoing counter-terrorism operations against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region of the Hirshabelle State.
US military officials said the assistance is intended to enhance the operational capacity of Somali forces and support the continuity of operations targeting Al-Shabaab positions across several areas of Hirshabelle, particularly in Middle Shabelle, where fighting has intensified in recent weeks.
The Ministry of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia welcomed the support, expressing appreciation for what it described as continued and timely backing from the United States at a critical phase of ongoing military operations.
The United States is a longstanding security partner of Somalia and plays a central role in supporting the country’s counter-insurgency efforts. This support includes training, equipping, and advising elite Somali units such as the Danab Commandos, whose formation and operational readiness have been heavily supported by Washington.
In addition to capacity-building assistance, AFRICOM has also taken part in selected joint operations with Somali forces, including coordinated airstrikes and limited ground engagements aimed at degrading Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities.
The latest handover highlights continued international backing for Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its national security forces and advance stability in central regions affected by prolonged conflict.
