Somali PM Condemns Mogadishu Police Attack as Failed Coup, Government Vows Action as Opposition Plans Protests

Mogadishu (Raxanreeb Online) – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has strongly condemned Thursday’s clashes at Warta Nabadda district police station in Mogadishu, describing the incident as a failed coup attempt by opposition forces. He said the attack, carried out by armed militias, was unlawful and aimed at disrupting peace and order in the capital. The Prime Minister instructed security agencies to take firm legal measures against anyone involved, stressing that Mogadishu deserves stability and progress, not violence and chaos.

Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur “Fiqi” also denounced the assault, accusing the perpetrators of deliberately targeting national security forces, destroying police vehicles and infrastructure, and causing casualties among officers. He likened the attackers to terrorists and called for their immediate prosecution in court, urging judicial institutions to play their role in protecting the rule of law and national security.

Meanwhile, the opposition coalition known as the National Salvation Forum announced plans to stage a peaceful protest in Mogadishu on Saturday, September 27. Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said the demonstrations would be held in Tarbuunka, Deyniile, and Siinaay, focusing on what he described as unlawful land evictions by the government. He warned that the administration’s current approach risks provoking further confrontations with the opposition if it continues to suppress dissent.

Banaadir Regional Governor and Mogadishu Mayor, Hassan Mohamed Hussein “Muungaab,” also condemned the incident, describing it as an organized crime by opposition groups. Speaking during a security meeting in Kaaraan district, he accused opposition leaders of emboldening extremists through their rhetoric. Addressing the land dispute, he defended the municipality’s authority to reallocate property for redevelopment, arguing that much of the land in question was already unsafe and needed to be repurposed for the security and improvement of Mogadishu. Calm has since returned to the city following Thursday’s deadly clashes, which left several casualties.
