The East African Community secretariat has officially thrown its support behind Somalia and reaffirmed its recognition of the Federal Republic of Somalia as a single state.

In a statement released on Sunday in Arusha, the EAC noted and aligned with the position expressed by the African Union as reflected in the Constitutive Act of the African Union and relevant decisions concerning the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The EAC declaration only recognizes the Federal Republic of Somalia under its leadership; their stand is within the constraints of the African Union. The EAC further highlighted that it only recognizes Somalia with the boundaries inherited during independence and in accordance with the EAC treaty.

The EAC also called upon the international community to urgently resolve the looming conflicts under the established legal framework.
