Ethiopian military chief, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, has criticized Somali leaders, accusing them of collaborating with Ethiopia’s adversaries. During the 47th anniversary of the Ethiopian eastern command forces in Jigjiga, he emphasized the readiness of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) to defend the nation’s sovereignty and counter any threats to its development. He warned against both external and internal enemies working to undermine Ethiopia’s progress.
The commander also highlighted the ENDF’s commitment to maintaining regional peace, particularly in Somalia, where Ethiopian troops have been actively involved in anti-terrorism operations. Diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have been strained since Ethiopia signed an agreement to lease part of Somaliland’s coastline, sparking condemnation from Mogadishu over what it perceives as a violation of Somali territorial sovereignty.
Tensions have escalated further with reports of Egypt providing military support to Somalia under a defense agreement. Ethiopia, already in conflict with Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and Nile water rights, views this alliance as a significant threat to its security. The growing cooperation between Somalia and Egypt has deepened the rift between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu.
