The National Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission of Somalia (NIEBC) has unveiled their first-ever poll results in Banadir in nearly 60 years.
The poll results are being seen as a big step in realizing their democratic space and shifting to a one-person-one-vote system and ditching the 4.5 clan system that has been used in Somalia for decades.
The local council elections were conducted in 16 districts, where the NIEBC confirmed that over 500,000 voters cast their votes in 523 polling stations. The election saw 1,604 candidates from 20 polling stations participate in the elections.
The official data form from NIEBC indicates that 918,890 people registered as voters, 503,916 was the total number of votes cast, 390 seats were contested, and 20 political parties participated.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) has managed to garner a significant number of seats in the Banadir elections.
The Official results are set to be released on January 17th, 2026, after the Somalia supreme court has listened and reviewed all petition that would have arisen from the election
