President Abdikadir Ahamed Aw-Ali of the recently recognized state of Northeastern of the Federal Republic of Somalia has opposed the secession of Somaliland and rejected the colonial treaties, which he said were treaties between clans and not Somaliland and were nullified by the 1960 act.
Speaking in a televised public address following the December 26th Israel declaration of Somaliland sovereignty, which the federal government called an act of aggression.
President Abdikadir echoed the federal government’s sentiments and noted that the move by Israel was aimed at exploiting internal differences in Somalia to push their interests in the Red Sea.
“We strongly condemn Israel’s aggression and violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. This is not about self-determination; it’s about the fragmentation of a sovereign African nation.” said President Abdikadir.
He further noted that the 19th-century British protectorate treaties were never meant to create a permanent sovereign ethnic state separate from the rest of the Somali people.
“Our history is not defined by lines drawn in the 1884 treaties but by the blood and brotherhood of the Somali people,” he said.
He urged Somali people to unite and termed the restoration of the colonial border a legal fallacy. He called upon the Somali youth in the northeastern state to shun divisive ideologies and support the federal state of Somalia.
