Mogadishu – A significant political dispute has intensified over the proposed amendments to Somalia’s Provisional Federal Constitution, as the Federal Parliament prepares to convene tomorrow to deliberate on the matter.
Over the past several hours, Mogadishu has experienced heightened political activity marked by consultations, coordination meetings, and organized mobilization efforts led by members of the Federal Parliament who oppose the constitutional amendment process. These engagements have focused largely on expressing concern regarding the procedure, timing, and broader consensus surrounding the proposed revisions.
Opposition to the amendments initially emerged from lawmakers affiliated with opposition groups, as well as from the federal member states of Jubbaland and Puntland, in addition to several prominent political figures. The resistance has since expanded, with reports indicating that members of parliament from South West State are coordinating to adopt a unified stance against the ratification of the amendments.
In a related development, a number of members of parliament representing Hawiye constituencies convened a private meeting last night, where they reportedly voiced objections to proceeding with the constitutional changes under the current framework. Sources indicate that the Presidency has been hosting a series of consultations aimed at addressing the growing impasse and facilitating dialogue among key stakeholders.
The constitutional amendment initiative led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is now facing its most substantial political challenge since it was introduced. The escalating opposition reflects concerns among critics who argue that any revision of the Provisional Constitution should be grounded in broad-based political agreement and inclusive consultation.
Parliament’s forthcoming session is widely expected to serve as a critical juncture for the reform process, as lawmakers debate the future direction of constitutional amendments amid an increasingly polarized political environment.
