UN Somali Envoy Warns Against Threats to National Unity

The Federal Government of Somalia has called on countries with troops stationed in Somalia to comply with international law and regional frameworks. This appeal was made by Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Osman Baalle, during a briefing at the UN Security Council.

Ambassador Baalle emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s territorial integrity, warning that foreign interests could at times pose risks to the country’s stability. He cautioned that any actions disregarding international laws and Somalia’s unity could be viewed as acts of aggression.

The ambassador also highlighted the need for adequate financial support to sustain peacekeeping operations in Somalia, underscoring that economic assistance is crucial for long-term stability.

While Baalle’s statement did not single out any country, it is seen as a response to concerns about Ethiopia’s involvement in Somalia’s territorial matters, particularly after Ethiopia signed a maritime agreement with Somaliland in January of this year, which some interpret as undermining Somalia’s territorial unity.
