Behind-the-Scenes Talks: NISA and Opposition Seek to Avert Tensions Ahead of June 4 Protest

Mogadishu, Somalia – Reports emerging from Mogadishu indicate that the Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Mahad Mohamed Salad, held a series of private consultations on Friday night with representatives of the Somali Salvation Forum, focusing on security arrangements in the capital and preparations for a demonstration called by opposition groups for 4 June.

The meetings come amid ongoing efforts to ensure stability and maintain public order in Mogadishu as political tensions continue to shape the national discourse. Sources familiar with the discussions said the talks centered on measures to safeguard the security of the capital and facilitate the planned demonstration in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The consultations followed an earlier meeting between the NISA Director and former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, during which the broader political and security situation in the country was reportedly discussed. According to informed sources, the parties underscored the importance of preserving stability and preventing any actions that could lead to security disturbances or confrontations during the planned gathering.

The Federal Government of Somalia had previously alleged that a recent demonstration in Mogadishu involved armed individuals said to be affiliated with members of the opposition, a claim that heightened concerns regarding the security of political assemblies and public protests in the capital.

Observers view the ongoing engagement between security officials and opposition leaders as part of wider efforts to enhance coordination among political stakeholders and ensure that constitutionally protected political activities are conducted in a manner that safeguards public safety and preserves stability.

No official statement has yet been issued regarding the outcome of the meetings. However, the discussions are widely regarded as a constructive step toward fostering cooperation between the authorities and opposition groups and reducing the risk of tensions ahead of the planned demonstration.
