MOGADISHU, Somalia — Abdikariim Ahmd Hassan, chairperson of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, has said Mogadishu’s upcoming local government election will be conducted as a single-day vote on Dec. 25, 2025.
Speaking on election preparations, Abdikariim said the security situation was stable, citing the fact that registered political organisations have been able to campaign peacefully during the ongoing campaign period. He added that the public should have confidence in the process and trust the election.
He also urged independent media outlets to provide the Somali public with accurate and timely coverage of the vote, describing election reporting as a major national responsibility.
“We want to hold a one-day election on December 25. If there were security problems, political organisations would not have been able to campaign. Security can be relied upon. To the Somali people, I say: this is the day you will vote for the existence of the Somali state,” Abdikariim said.
The local government election in Mogadishu is scheduled for Dec. 25, 2025, and will be contested by political organisations registered with the commission, which are currently campaigning to win voters’ support.
