Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia’s unity and stability, emphasizing that the backing is rooted in Somalia’s 30 years of ongoing instability rather than any rivalry with Ethiopia. Speaking at a police academy graduation ceremony, President Al-Sisi made it clear that Egypt’s commitment is genuine, extending beyond regional politics. His statement follows a week of heightened attention on Egypt’s active role in strengthening Somalia’s stability, further solidified by the recent arrival of a substantial military aid shipment from the Egyptian Armed Forces in Somalia.
The shipment marks one of the largest modern arms deliveries Somalia has received from an international ally, signifying a deepening military collaboration between the two nations. Somalia’s Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur expressed gratitude, stating, “We know our interests and we will choose between our allies and our enemies. Thank you, Egypt.” This statement underscores the strengthening defence ties between Somalia and Egypt, following the August defence pact and military cooperation protocol signed during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo, which has cemented both countries’ commitment to enhancing regional security.
Egypt’s active role in supporting Somalia’s sovereignty was further highlighted by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who, addressing the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, condemned any unilateral actions threatening Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. This stance reaffirms Egypt’s dedication to Somalia’s territorial integrity, underscoring the importance of collaborative regional efforts in promoting stability.
The recent military aid and diplomatic engagement signify a turning point in the Egypt-Somalia partnership, positioning Somalia as an emerging force on the global stage. President Al-Sisi’s affirmations offer a renewed sense of hope for a stable and prosperous Somalia, as Egypt’s support continues to bolster the country’s efforts in achieving long-term peace and security.
