Raxanreeb Online – Fierce battles in the Calmiskaad Mountains between Puntland forces and ISIS militants have left nearly 20 people dead over the past three days, according to military sources. The clashes mark a significant phase in Puntland’s ongoing offensive to eliminate ISIS strongholds in the region.
General Maxamud Maxamed Axmed, widely known as Faadhigo, the spokesperson for Puntland’s military operations, confirmed that seven ISIS fighters were killed during the recent fighting. Tragically, Puntland also suffered losses, with six soldiers losing their lives in a landmine explosion. Despite the sacrifices, General Faadhigo emphasized that the forces have made critical advancements, capturing key ISIS positions.
“Our mission is clear: to reclaim our land and weaken the enemy’s capabilities,” said General Faadhigo. “We lost six brave soldiers, but we also inflicted heavy losses on ISIS, taking control of important positions, including their base in Xaglay.”
The general described the challenges posed by ISIS’s reliance on landmines, which he said are being used extensively in the conflict. He added that Puntland forces have reclaimed over 250 kilometers of territory, capturing around 40 enemy bases in the process. “This is a hard-fought battle, but we are making progress. The sacrifices of our soldiers are not in vain,” he remarked.
General Faadhigo also highlighted that many of the ISIS fighters encountered are foreign nationals, underscoring the global nature of the threat. “This is not just a local problem. These are foreign militants who have caused harm across the world. We are determined to free our land from their grip and ensure peace for our people,” he said.
The operation in the Calmiskaad Mountains, launched weeks ago, is part of Puntland’s broader strategy to root out extremist elements from the region. The recent victories reflect the resilience and determination of Puntland’s forces in their fight for stability and security.
