MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali parliamentarian Daahir Amiin Jesow has accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of misleading the Somali public by withholding details of an agreement reached with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Speaking on Wednesday, Jesow criticized the president for allegedly fostering anti-Ethiopian sentiment among Somalis while secretly engaging in negotiations with Ethiopia. He claimed that Mohamud had encouraged public opposition to Ethiopia, leading to widespread protests, only for revelations of a clandestine deal to surface later, sparking outrage and a sense of betrayal among citizens.
“The Somali people had the right to be informed about this agreement,” Jesow stated, stressing the importance of governmental transparency and accountability in national decision-making. He condemned the president’s lack of disclosure, arguing that such secrecy had misled the nation.
The MP emphasized that the Somali Parliament has a duty to investigate the matter thoroughly, ensuring that any agreements with foreign nations align with the interests of the Somali people. He urged fellow lawmakers to hold government officials accountable for any undisclosed dealings that could impact the country’s future.
