Somali Police Arrest Puntland Adviser Over Security Allegations

The Somali Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Ahmed Abdi Mahmoud Hurre, an adviser to the President of Puntland State, following a security operation conducted at the perimeter of Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.

In a brief statement released on its official channels, the Police said the operation was carried out as part of its national security mandate. Hurre was accused of engaging in activities deemed to be detrimental to national security, although specific details of the allegations were not disclosed.

“The Somali Police Force, in the discharge of its national duty, apprehended the suspect Ahmed Abdi Mahmoud Hurre, who was involved in acts against security. An investigation is ongoing,” the statement read.

Security sources indicated that Hurre, a close adviser to Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, has been held at a Federal Government detention facility for several hours as investigations continue.

The arrest has sparked criticism from several members of both chambers of the Federal Parliament representing constituencies in Puntland. The lawmakers condemned the move and called for clarification regarding the legal basis and circumstances surrounding the detention.

The Puntland administration also issued a strong condemnation of the arrest, describing it as unacceptable and warning of potential repercussions. President Said Abdullahi Deni’s office signaled that it would respond to what it considers an unlawful action against one of its senior officials.

The incident is likely to intensify existing political tensions between the Federal Government and Puntland, amid ongoing disagreements over constitutional amendments and broader governance issues. Further developments are expected as investigations proceed.
