Somali Future Council Accepts Federal Dialogue Initiative Amid Political Deadlock
The Somali Future Council has agreed to participate in a national dialogue proposed by the Federal Government of Somalia, citing the country’s fragile political situation and the need to avert a looming constitutional crisis.

The decision follows a series of internal consultations by the Council after a meeting held in Kismayo, the interim capital of Jubbaland. In a formal press release issued on Saturday, the Council said its position was shaped by concern over Somalia’s increasingly complex political environment, marked by disputes over constitutional amendments, electoral timelines, and federal–state relations.

According to the statement, the Council views dialogue as essential to preventing a constitutional vacuum and preserving national unity. However, it attached clear conditions to its participation, foremost among them a demand that Villa Somalia suspend any unilateral changes to the Provisional Constitution. The Council stressed that constitutional reform must be addressed through inclusive and consensus-based mechanisms.

The Council also proposed that the agenda of the talks focus on key national priorities, including security—particularly efforts to combat Al-Shabaab and Daesh—preparations for the 2026 general elections, federal governance arrangements, and the worsening humanitarian situation caused by drought.

To support its engagement in the process, the Somali Future Council announced the formation of a technical committee tasked with coordinating preparatory work and representing the Council in discussions with federal authorities.

The Federal Government has yet to publicly respond to the conditions outlined by the Council, but the dialogue initiative is widely seen as a critical test of whether Somalia’s political actors can bridge deep divisions ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle.
