Somalia and IGAD Discuss Regional Security in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (RHN) –Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Ahmed Madobe Fiqi, welcomed a delegation led by IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu to Mogadishu today. The high-level discussions focused on the current situation in the Horn of Africa, including tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, which have been a growing concern for regional stability.

Minister Fiqi stated, “We discussed the regional situation, including the issues Somalia and Ethiopia are facing.” Both parties emphasized the need for continued dialogue to address these challenges and foster peace and security in the region. The discussions covered various aspects of regional cooperation, particularly in the areas of political stability and social security for the people in the region.

In addition to security, the meeting also focused on enhancing regional economic collaboration. The Minister and the IGAD delegation explored strategies to boost economic ties and promote sustainable development across the Horn of Africa, aligning with the broader goals of regional growth and integration.

As part of these efforts, an agreement was reached to establish a Blue Economy Center in Somalia, under IGAD’s framework. This center will capitalize on Somalia’s extensive coastline, one of the longest in Africa, to drive economic development and benefit all member states in the region. The initiative is aimed at advancing maritime resources and promoting sustainable use of the ocean for economic growth across East Africa.
