Somali Senate Removes Senator Saalax Axmed Jaamac for Absenteeism

The Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament’s Upper House, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, has called for the dismissal of Senator Saalax Axmed Jaamac, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia. Speaker Hashi addressed the Senate today, urging the removal of Senator Saalax due to his prolonged absence from Senate sessions for over two and a half years.

In his remarks, Speaker Hashi emphasized that Senator Saalax has not attended even a single session during this period, making it necessary to fill the vacant seat as it appears that the senator is no longer interested in his parliamentary duties. The Speaker highlighted the importance of ensuring representation in the Senate, especially for such a critical position.

Speaker Hashi further pointed out that Senator Saalax, along with other senators representing northern regions, were selected by two traditional elders. He noted that one elder is currently residing in Burco, while the other is in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, both of whom are not present in Mogadishu.

Several senators voiced opposition to the proposal, arguing against the removal of Senator Saalax. They expressed their discontent with Speaker Hashi’s approach to the matter, stating that they will not support the dismissal. Senator Saalax has reportedly been absent from Senate sessions since his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister, focusing solely on his executive duties.
