
Raxanreeb Online Mogadishu: The federal government of Somalia has committed to fully engage the international organization Assembly in ensuring a safer, secure, clean ocean environment.
Speaking at the International Maritime Organization Assembly in London, Somalia’s minister of ports and maritime transport, Abdulkadir Mohammed Nur, revealed that Somalia’s accession to the International Maritime Organization marks a new era in a country that boasts of having the longest coastline in Africa.
“This is an important step that boosts our role in the global maritime distress and safety systems; it also enhances safety for seafarers and environmental monitoring and widens our maritime security.”
The minister also revealed that Somalia was joining the Assembly at a crucial point in time when an intensive domestic reforms agenda was in progress.
“We are upgrading our ports, modernizing maritime administration, enhancing security, and aligning our laws with international standards,” said Minister Nur.
The move is also aimed at supporting global initiatives where Somalia has committed to supporting efforts towards decarbonization, digitalization, and safer seas. Which Minister Nur said were in line with the Somalia National Transformative Plan.
Modernizing The commitment marks a new dawn and a steady recovery for the longest coastline state in Africa, with over 3,300 kilometers worth of coastline.
It will unlock the blue economy and transform investment and trade and also enhance safety and security.
