Awdal MPs warn Somaliland president over military escalation in the region

Lawmakers elected from Awdal Region and serving in the House of Representatives of Somaliland have warned President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Cirro against what they described as moves that could trigger renewed unrest in the region.

In remarks to the media, the MPs said communities in Awdal are already suffering the consequences of heightened security measures imposed by the Somaliland administration, which they claim have caused civilian harm and increased tension. They expressed concern over information suggesting plans to deploy additional military forces to the area.

MP Mohamed Abib, one of the representatives from Awdal, cautioned that any further escalation could have serious repercussions, stressing that stability cannot be achieved through coercion and that communities cannot be forced to accept actions taken against their will. He called for restraint and urged collective efforts to oppose any steps that could worsen the situation.

According to the lawmakers, the government is considering intensified security operations in Awdal in response to ongoing unrest. They added that several people remain in detention, while signs of recent clashes are visible in some towns, underscoring the fragile security environment in the region.
