Former Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke has warned Puntland’s leadership that any armed confrontation in Galkayo could carry serious political and security consequences.

In a statement addressing mounting tensions in the city, Sharmarke urged Puntland authorities to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could lead to clashes between forces affiliated with the administration.

He said Galkayo’s political and security dynamics differed significantly from those of the Cal-Miskaad mountain region, stressing that the situation required dialogue, de-escalation and a negotiated settlement rather than military action.

Sharmarke cautioned Puntland against launching what he described as an “act of aggression” against other Puntland-affiliated forces without a clear legal justification.

He also raised concerns over reported troop movements and the deployment of weapons towards Galkayo, warning that diverting military resources to an internal dispute could weaken ongoing operations against militant groups.

The former prime minister said internal confrontation could undermine counterterrorism efforts, deepen political divisions and destabilise an already sensitive city.

He called on Puntland’s leadership to prioritise peace, dialogue and coordination among security forces, warning that internal disputes should not be allowed to derail broader efforts to maintain stability and combat terrorism.
