Dozens Feared Hit as Al-Shabaab Clashes With Residents in Hiiraan

Heavy fighting has erupted in Tardo, Hiiraan region, between Al-Shabaab militants and local residents, following an armed confrontation in the center of the area, according to local officials and residents.

The fighting reportedly broke out after Al-Shabaab fighters attempted to confiscate a weapon from a local resident. The confrontation escalated into an exchange of gunfire that subsequently spread to other parts of Tardo, the area’s local administration told Risaala Media.

Residents said Al-Shabaab fighters opened fire on civilians who were in the center of the area, resulting in multiple reported casualties. Initial reports indicate that more than 10 people may have been killed or injured, although the figure has not been independently verified.

Tardo is a busy commercial hub, particularly on Thursdays, when traders and residents from parts of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle travel to the area for commerce and other activities.

The violence has disrupted movement and raised concerns over the safety of civilians and traders in the area.
