
Somalia’s president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is expected to attend a high-stakes tripartite meeting in Nairobi this Sunday.
The closed-door meeting in Nairobi will be attended by President Mohamud and the prime minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, and will be hosted by the president of Kenya, William Ruto. The meeting is expected to address regional security, the fight against Al-Shabaab, and the transition of the AU missions.
Reports have revealed that the meeting will also address engaging with Somali opposition to stabilize the rising political temperature following the Mogadishu polls.
The Jubaland crisis tensions between the federal government and Jubaland state: Kenya is an interested party by virtue of sharing a border with Jubaland and would play a major role in resolving the wrangles.
The Nairobi summit will be a follow-up to the recent brief meeting in Addis Ababa between President Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy, who have been working on resolving long-standing tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia regarding maritime and territorial sovereignty.
Kenya-Ethiopia economic integration will also be discussed; Lamu port and the SGR connection following the bilateral pact to construct an SGR line connecting Lamu port to Addis Ababa via Moyale will be on the books in the meeting.
