MOGADISHU — Calm appeared to return to Mogadishu after two days of armed confrontations and heightened political tensions involving forces of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and troops aligned with opposition leaders.
Residents across the capital reported a noticeable decline in military activity following days of heavy deployments and sporadic clashes in several neighborhoods. Traffic resumed on major roads in Mogadishu, while civilians gradually returned to normal movement after security forces withdrew from key flashpoints.
The easing of tensions comes amid ongoing political mediation efforts aimed at preventing further escalation in the capital.
Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire returned to their residences in the Halane area of Mogadishu after spending recent days outside the area due to security concerns. Their return followed behind-the-scenes consultations and diplomatic engagement intended to stabilize the situation and reduce the risk of confrontation.
In a statement, the Federal Government said security operations conducted in Mogadishu had concluded successfully. Authorities described the operation as targeting what they called “anti-peace militias” allegedly attempting to destabilize the capital. Government officials stated that Somali security forces had restored order and prevented actions deemed a threat to public security and national stability.
The developments unfolded against the backdrop of deepening political disagreements between the federal government and opposition figures over key national issues, including the electoral process, constitutional matters, and the direction of Somalia’s democratic transition.
International partners have meanwhile intensified diplomatic efforts to encourage dialogue between the rival sides. Sources familiar with the discussions said members of the international community are urging both the government and opposition leaders to engage in negotiations to avoid further instability and preserve political and security gains achieved in recent years.
No official casualty figures have yet been released in connection with the recent confrontations.
