Somali Leaders Meet in Mogadishu to Address Electoral Tensions

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Consultative Council (NCC) reconvened today at Somalia’s Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The meeting included the presence of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, his deputy, and the leaders of the HirShabelle, Galmudug, and South West states, as well as the Governor of Banadir and Mayor of Mogadishu.

The NCC agenda focuses on key national issues, including security, state-building, and electoral processes, along with other essential areas critical to Somalia’s progress. However, notable absences included the Presidents of Jubaland, who recently opposed term extensions, and Puntland, who have been previously absent from the council’s sessions.

Despite these absences, the leaders in attendance are expected to issue impactful decisions, especially regarding the electoral process, which remains a contentious topic in Somali politics.
