MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Federal Government has for the first time released official casualty figures from the recent armed confrontations in Mogadishu involving forces aligned with former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Health said one person was killed and 55 others wounded during the clashes, while expressing condolences to the families of those affected by the violence.
The government’s figures contrast sharply with a recent United Nations assessment of the conflict between federal security forces and opposition-affiliated armed groups in the Somali capital.
The UN reported that at least 13 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in the fighting, with approximately 13,000 residents displaced from districts impacted by the clashes.
The confrontations, which heightened political tensions in Mogadishu, came amid deepening disagreements over the country’s electoral process and broader constitutional and security disputes between the federal government and opposition figures.
