
The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Defense, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has urged Somali citizens to register as voters to exercise their democratic right in selecting their leaders.
Minister Fiqi successfully registered and received his voter registration card in Galkacyo Mudug region at the national independent electoral commission in Galkacyo
He emphasised the profound historical context “Today I arrived in Galkacyo and it’s an honour to formally register and receive my voters card. elections are constitutional right that have been absent from the hands of people for 56 years and today the right has been restored.”
The minister emphasized that public participation in the election process is the foundation for achieving the one-person-one-vote system that will ensure genuine, representative governance that reflects the will of the people.
Somalia had its national direct popular vote in 1969, prior to a military coup and subsequent collapse into civil war.
Since then Somalia’s leaders have been chosen through a complex, indirect electoral model where a power-sharing model of 4.5 was adopted, where clan elders and delegates select members of parliament, who in turn elect the president.
Minister Faqi prior served as the director of the national intelligence service, he further called upon the residents of Galkacyo, which is a strategic city that sits in the central Mudug area, to actively engage in the registration process. the national
