MOGADISHU, – International partners have expressed growing concern over Somalia’s current political situation and called on Somali leaders and political stakeholders to urgently resume dialogue and reach consensus on the country’s electoral framework.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, members of the international community stressed the importance of constructive engagement and compromise, urging all parties to work together to agree on an electoral roadmap that serves the interests of the Somali people and safeguards the country’s political stability.
“We call on all stakeholders to urgently resume dialogue and reach an agreement on Somalia’s electoral path,” the statement said, emphasizing that consensus-building remains essential to preserving Somalia’s democratic gains and maintaining political cohesion.
The international partners also reaffirmed their readiness to support Somali-led discussions and mediation efforts should Somali stakeholders formally request such assistance.
The statement highlighted the importance of responsible leadership at a time of heightened political sensitivity, urging Somali leaders to place national interests above political differences and avoid actions that could exacerbate existing political and security tensions.
“At this critical moment, Somali leaders should prioritize the national interest and refrain from steps that could further increase political and security tensions,” the statement noted.
The appeal comes amid ongoing disagreements over the country’s electoral model and broader political consultations involving the Federal Government of Somalia and various political actors. The unresolved differences have raised concerns among both domestic and international observers about the prospects for achieving an inclusive and widely accepted electoral process.
Diplomatic sources and political analysts have repeatedly stressed that broad-based dialogue and consensus will be critical to ensuring a peaceful, credible, and legitimate electoral process capable of strengthening Somalia’s democratic institutions and advancing the country’s state-building efforts.
The joint statement was endorsed by a broad coalition of international partners, including the European Union Delegation to Somalia, the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Portugal, Spain, and Ireland.
The signatories reaffirmed their continued commitment to supporting Somalia’s peacebuilding, governance, and democratic development efforts, while encouraging all Somali stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at securing a peaceful, inclusive, and consensus-based electoral process.
The statement reflects increasing international attention on Somalia’s political trajectory as the country navigates a critical period marked by debates over electoral arrangements, constitutional reforms, and the future direction of its democratic governance.
