Somalia joins the Pan-African push to criminalize colonialism.

Raxanreeb Online Mogadishu: The federal government of Somalia has joined African states seeking to criminalize colonialism and seek justice and reparations for colonial-era injustices.

The meeting that has brought together ministers, experts, and historians from across Africa is being held in Algiers, Algeria, where a consensus is to be reached in the final Algiers Declaration, which will be submitted to the African Union summit slated for February 2026 in Addis Ababa.

The Federal Government of Somalia Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Ali Mohamed Omar noted that once the Algiers Declaration final document is submitted and adopted, it will be an official reference document for recording colonial-era crimes and recognizing their lasting impact across the African continent.

Somalia’s participation in the forum underscores its willingness to unify and push to address unresolved colonial-era violations.

The declaration is set to push for the recognition of historical injustices in Africa and develop structures that will push for the reparations here aspect of financial reparations for the years of economic exploitation through resources.

The meeting will also seek to create a permanent working framework that will seek a legal framework in seeking compensation for the colonial-era violations.
